Stay safe with new winter tires

Stay safe on the roads this winter and consider getting winter tires for your vehicle. Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) offers special financing through their Winter Tire Program. From their Winter Tire Program (WTP) website:

“The Winter Tire Program (WTP) provides low-interest financing to eligible Manitobans at prime plus two per cent*, on up to $2,000 per vehicle. This financing can be used for the purchase of qualifying winter tires and associated costs from participating retailers. You have the choice to select a financing term between one and four years and a monthly payment withdrawal day.”

Why do you need winter tires? Transport Canada and the Traffic Injury Research Foundation have a few good reasons:

  • At temperatures below 7°C, all-season and summer tires begin to lose elasticity, leading to less traction. Winter tires keep their elasticity and grip at much lower temperatures.
  • Wide, high-performance tires, other than those specifically designed as winter tires, aren’t suitable for snow-covered roads.
  • A two-wheel drive vehicle with winter tires will outperform a 4-wheel drive vehicle without them in braking and cornering.
  • At the same speed, a car with winter tires on an icy road needs 6.4 metres to stop where the same vehicle without winter tires needs 12.1 metres.

Check out the MPI website for full details on program qualifications.
